Patty was originally from China, born and raised and came to Hong Kong to work. We had met once for a quick drink and conversation in my favorite Hong Kong watering hole. But we had kept in contact through pokes and messages through Facebook.
So with my quick return to Hong Kong and her schedule coinciding, she sent me a message if we could meet up. She sent me a message soon as she had just flown in from Shinjin that morning. I told her that I was going to be flying to Manila that evening to see my girlfriend. She sent me a message to see if we could meet at the Airport Express and talk as I traveled. I told her no problem..
So I met her at the Starbucks beside the Central Airport Express. I played a joke on her and hid behind the column that held up the structure of the IFC and called her on her mobile.
“I am here at Starbucks. I am looking right at you. You see me?” I said hiding. The local Hong Kong sitting nearby on a bench looked at me like I was crazy.
I could hear her moving on her mobile phone. “No, no. Where are you?”
“What do you mean I am standing right in front of you? Don’t you see me?”
More rustling and she was a bit breathless, “No, no! I don’t see you. Where are you?”
“You telling me I am so gweilo that I am transparent?”
She laughed. “No, no. Where are you?”
Just then I came out from the column, and she saw me instantly and smiled. The people around her seemed a bit perturbed because of the ruckus she and I were making. But when she started walking towards me, I could see the sadness on her face.
