The Ugly Thing (Hong Kong)

Sex is easy. And saying you love someone is easy. And buying gifts and being thoughtful is actually easy if you discipline yourself. So you can carry yourself that you are in a relationship.

But suddenly, you find things are missing. I think of it as a ship on the open ocean and you start springing leaks. Some choose to ignore it. Some don't sense the disconnect. They don't realize the distance. And they go down like the Titanic.

Morby was slowly teaching me Cantonese. In the mornings when we walked to work that's when she would drill me. Ask me about the phrases and statements she had taught me the day and night before. Most of them were phrases that made her laugh – dirty words or sexual positions or acts. So I would say them aloud and proudly – and while walking she would throw her hand across her mouth and laugh loudly.


And so it was good. We were building something. Or were we?
